Short Run Printing
Many times, short run printing is done with digital printing. Digital printing specifically refers to impression regeneration. The advantages to digital printing are electronic collation (printing a book’s pages in order), creating different versions of the same book, personalization, and one-off printing. Digital printing unit costs remain constant over all run lengths. Some larger quantity short run printing can utilize offset litho printing, but because of the nonproductive period of press setup called “makeready,” extremely short print runs are not economically justified for offset litho. Short run printing normally applies to print runs up to 500 copies.
